Every December as our students head off for vacation, our UVic ELC teachers head back to the classroom to spend 5 days as students attending professional development workshops. It’s our very own ELC mini-conference with workshops offered by both external and internal speakers.

Keeping up with new ideas in language teaching and classroom delivery methods is an important priority at the ELC. One of the challenges teachers face is keeping up with the fast pace of new technology, social media and online resources. With this in mind, this year, the theme for our professional development workshops was “Our 21st Century Classroom: A Teacher’s Toolkit”. The focus was all about technology: how to use it and how to integrate it into our classrooms.  Workshops included sessions on using TED talks, ways of flipping content, PoodLL for Moodle, PowerPoint with voice recording, and many more.

Professional development is not only about work, however. Teachers also need to learn how to relax and have a bit of fun. This year fun activities included kickboxing and art. Here are a few pictures of teachers de-stressing after 5 days of hard work!
