Encounters with Place | Day 2: Land (only)
PRODUCT
An introduction to local ecology, including sights and sounds, with a focus on the landscapes, waterscape and plants that surround us.
This is one day of a two-day program running over two Saturdays, approximately 6 hours each day. You can sign up for one or both sessions. Day 2: Saturday, March 21, 2026
9 am–3:30 pm
Day 2 begins with a brief in-class presentation introducing students to names and imagery of local trees (both native and introduced), followed by a walk along the Alumni Chip Trail, ending at the Cottonwood Swamp forest and the Bowker Creek headwaters. Students will learn to recognize significant tree species and learn basic methods for carrying out height assessments.
After a return to the Continuing Studies Building for lunch (lunch not included), students will listen to a brief presentation on the flora and fauna to be found at local beaches. They will then take a walk along the lower portions of Hobbes Creek to its outflow at Cadboro Bay Beach.
