Which ELC program(s) did you attend?

I attended the Monthly English program.

What made your ELC program special?

The ELC program is truly helpful for learning English. The teachers and Cultural Assistants (CAs) are amazing. I could ask them anything whenever I had a question or just wanted to practice speaking in English. There is also a Learning Centre where I could talk with friendly volunteers. They not only helped me with my homework but also made me feel more comfortable using English. In addition to organized English classes that match my level, there are also fun activities with the CAs, which change every week. These diverse programs and the amazing people at ELC are what make the experience so special. They create a supportive and engaging environment where students can improve their English.

What is the most memorable thing that happened to you as an ELC student?

One of the most memorable experiences I had as an ELC student was giving a speech as the valedictorian at the farewell party. I applied because my classmate encouraged me to try, and at first, I was really nervous and anxious. But I saw it as a rare opportunity, so I did my best. In the end, it became an unforgettable memory that gave me more confidence in myself and my English skills.

Do you have any favourite memories of Canadian culture?

One thing that really stood out to me about Canadian culture is how much people love sports. When I visited the Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities (CARSA), the athletic facility at UVic, I was honestly shocked. The facilities were incredible, and so many students were enjoying different activities. There was a gym, basketball courts, squash courts, dance studios, and even a climbing wall! Honestly, I was a little jealous that UVic students had access to such an amazing place.

I also had the chance to watch a UVic Vikes basketball game at CARSA, and the energy was unbelievable! The crowd was so passionate, and when the Vikes won, everyone went crazy. It was such a fun experience, and I could really feel the school spirit. Outside of campus, I noticed that almost every restaurant and pub had hockey games playing on TV. No matter where I went, hockey was always on! It made me realize how much Canadians love sports and how big a part of their culture it is.

How did learning with students from other cultures change how you see the world?

Before joining the Monthly English Program, I hardly had any opportunities to make friends from other countries. Through this program, I got to meet people from all over the world, including classmates from Japan and Brazil. We came from completely different cultural backgrounds, and it was fascinating to share our unique experiences during class discussions on various topics. Communicating in English not only improved my language skills but also allowed me to learn about cultures I had never experienced firsthand. Ultimately, this experience made me more empathetic and better prepared to thrive in a globalized world.

Did studying English with us open any new opportunities for you? What are you doing now?

After attending UVic, I became more passionate about improving my English skills. Right now, I’m preparing for the OPIC exam. Getting a good score will help me meet the graduation requirements at my university in Korea and also open up more opportunities for international experiences in the future. Although I still have a few years before graduation, I’ve started thinking about working abroad someday. That’s why I’m looking into international internship programs offered by my university. To participate in these opportunities, I’m motivated to continue studying English and achieve an official language certification.

What's it like living in Victoria?

I can honestly say that I fell in love with Victoria. Before coming here, I thought it might be a bit quiet and boring. I also considered myself more of a city person. But I was so wrong! The fresh air, stunning nature, and peaceful atmosphere made my time in Victoria truly unforgettable. The people were incredibly kind, and I felt so happy living here. I was also lucky! The weather was surprisingly sunny and mild. Thanks to that, I was able to explore so many places. For a month, I stayed with a homestay family, and my host was so warm and talkative. Every evening, we would share a delicious dinner and have long conversations, which became one of my favourite memories from Victoria.

Best advice for new students

I highly recommend the ELC program to anyone who wants to improve their English while enjoying the beautiful city Victoria! My month at UVic was truly unforgettable, and it became one of the most cherished memories of my life. I hope other students can have the same amazing experience. For those who are really eager to enhance their English skills, my advice is to make the most of every opportunity the program offers. Talk to the CAs as much as possible, actively use the Learning Centre, and engage with your classmates during lessons. The more you participate, the more you’ll grow. I truly hope many passionate students join the ELC program and get to experience Victoria life!
