The Gut-Mind Connection in Mental Health
COURSE
Course description
The gut and the brain communicate bidirectionally through the production of hormones, neurotransmitters, and other microbiome-derived substances. In this course, we will explore how the gut works (including its own nervous system), what the gut microbiome does, and how the brain fits in—plus how it influences our mental health and the best ways to support it through diet, exercise and lifestyle changes. Ciara Halvorson, a PhD student in the School of Medical Sciences, will draw from her neuroscience research and peer-reviewed gut-brain science to keep things evidence-based.
Learning objectives
- Outline strategies to support a healthy microbiome for better mental health
- Develop an understanding of how the gut and the brain communicate
- Discuss the implications of the gut in psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's
- Describe the processes underlying neuroplasticity; learn about brain anatomy, neuron signaling, and glial cells
