Course description

Territorial disputes, maritime boundaries, and cross-border legal frameworks affect states and populations around the world. This course combines the juridical study of borders through varying legal disciplines such as public law and international law, with applied dispute resolution, and border mapping experience to provide legal frameworks and hands-on tools you can use in your professional work. This course is unique for its focus on both the legal foundations and the practical skills needed to work on these challenges.

Through case studies and simulated dispute exercises, you will practise negotiation, argumentation, and conflict management in border contexts. You will learn about the juridical history of borders and new ideas on juridical bordering through discussions of territorial delimitations, border singularities, international disputes, border controls, and the effects of the EU and globalization on contemporary borders.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

Comprehend how international boundaries (land, maritime, an airspace) have been defined by law, both historically and today.
Assess the ways in which borders are used in legal and political spaces
Evaluate legal frameworks for resolving territorial and border disputes, including the International Court of Justice, international tribunals, and arbitration
Evaluate the benefits and risks of different dispute resolution options (negotiation, mediation, conciliation, adjudication.
Develop strategies to manage cross-border relations where international boundaries are uncertain or disputed
