Course description
This one-day workshop introduces participants to basic shoreline ecosystem principles and management practices, with emphasis on the purpose and application of the Green Shores rating systems. The content is of interest to landowners, conservation organizations, local government staff, elected officials, real estate agents and others who have a general interest in shoreline protection.
Topics covered include an overview of shoreline ecology including threats and improvements, an overview of shoreline governance, and an introduction to the Green Shores program. A visit to local shorelines will allow participants to consider the concepts in a practical setting. The workshop will conclude with a guided group discussion around how to implement key concepts and put new learning into practice.
Pre-registration is required as space is limited to 20 participants.
Learning objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the value of shoreline ecosystems and the physical processes that contribute to shoreline formation
- Summarize the impacts of human activity, invasive species, and climate change on shorelines
- Identify examples of shoreline improvements
- Outline responsibilities with respect to shoreline management
- Explain the benefits of the Green Shores program
- List the Green Shores application requirements and credit categories
- Outline the steps and responsibilities involved in implementing a Green Shores project by both the homeowner and a professional
- Identify Green Shores credits that a project is likely to qualify for
Location
This workshop will be held on the University of Victoria campus on June 16th, 2023.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites needed to take this workshop.
The Green Shores workshops commonly fill very quickly so please register early and take note of our withdrawal policy and associated admin fee if you cannot attend as scheduled. Additional Information
Please dress appropriately for the weather as a portion of this workshop will take place outdoors. Wear comfortable footwear for walking on shorelines. Bring a bag lunch.
