Course description

 

This course aims to present and explore the issues, principles and concepts of forest restoration with a specific focus on the history of Indigenous forest and woodland stewardship in the Salish Sea region. It considers elements of sustainable forestry from the perspectives of all the values and services of forest ecosystems. You will be exposed to specific forest restoration strategies and techniques in the classroom and in the field enabling an understanding of  ongoing restoration work and its diversity within multiple culturally significant areas on lək̓ ʷəŋən territory.

Format

Semi-distance format requiring attendance on campus for five days, plus readings to be completed online four weeks before the on-campus portion of the course and a post-field learner assessment report to be submitted after the five-day course.

  • 4 week open Brightspace for reading
  • 4 days in-person Field School ~ lək̓ ʷəŋən territory (multiple locations)
  • 5-day period post-Field School to submit final learner assessment report

Learning objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • identify key culturally important native species and have tools to learn more
  • have an understanding of the ongoing restoration work and its diversity within multiple culturally significant areas on lək̓ ʷəŋən territory
  • learn about the diversity and complexity of forest systems within lək̓ ʷəŋən territory and beyond
  • learn about and witness reciprocal relationship with local Indigenous knowledge holders and non-Indigenous partnerships in restoration
  • learn about the history of Indigenous rights within forest guardianship

Prerequisites

Acceptance to the RNS program or a combination of work and/or education experience equivalent to third-year standing.

  • If you’re not currently enrolled in the Restoration of Natural Systems (RNS) program, including UVic and Letter of Permission students from RRU and TRU, you must obtain approval from the Program Coordinator (ecorestoration@uvic.ca) before registering.

Tuition and fee payment:

  • RNS Diploma students pay $100 of the course tuition upon registration, with the remainder paid to UVic Tuition.
  • RNS Certificate students pay the full course tuition upon registration.

Non-refundable fee policy

Course fees will be fully refundable if you withdraw a minimum of 10 business days* prior to the start date of a course. After that, a non-refundable fee of $50.00 will be charged in addition to the regular UVic fee reduction deadlines listed in the UVic Calendar https://web.uvic.ca/calendar/general/dates.html. This non-refundable fee policy will take effect January 1st, 2019.

*A business day is considered an official work day and does not include statutory holidays or weekends.
