Course description

The TCF-Canada (Test de connaissance du français pour le Canada) is a general French language proficiency test specifically recognized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for permanent residency and citizenship applications. This test is crucial for many newcomers to Canada who are seeking to gain points for their immigration process.

Who should take this test?

This exam is intended for:

  • Newcomers to Canada
  • Individuals applying for permanent residency or Canadian citizenship
  • Immigration applicants required to submit TCF‑Canada results

Candidates come from a wide range of international and linguistic backgrounds.

About the test

The TCF‑Canada consists of four mandatory components assessing general French proficiency:

  1. Listening comprehension
    • 39 multiple choice questions (4 possible answers, only 1 correct answer)
    • Duration: 35 minutes
  2. Reading comprehension
    • 39 multiple choice questions (only 1 correct answer possible).
    • Duration: 60 minutes.
  3. Written skills
    • 3 exercises
    • Duration: 60 minutes.
  4. Verbal skills
    • Individual test one-on-one with an examiner: 3 exercises
    • Duration: 12 minutes (2 of which are for preparation)

Total test duration: 2 hours and 47 minutes
Format: Paper‑based

Results and preparation

Once registration is processed, candidates receive a link to create a France Éducation International account. Test results are released through this account, and candidates are notified by email.

All candidates, regardless of French level, are strongly encouraged to review the Manuel du Candidat, which outlines test format and procedures.
