Thinking About Friendship with Michel de Montaigne

COURSE

Course description

Come to a careful appreciation of two of Montaigne’s most charming essays, Friendship and Three Kinds of Association. In Friendship, Montaigne develops themes from ancient writings related to his bereaved friendship with his soulmate, Étienne de la Boétie—a philosopher who died young and inspired Montaigne to write the Essays. In Three Kinds, Montaigne explores his attitudes to other men, his feelings about the ladies, and his love of books, before closing with a vivid description of the library in his tower, where he wrote and rewrote his Essays.
