Examine the modern history of psychoactive substances and prohibition from colonial expansion to today’s war on drugs. Trace how substances became embedded in colonial labour systems, imperial trade, and state formation, and how prohibition has been articulated with extractive capitalism and imperial geopolitics. Explore how substances were redefined as "drugs," how addiction was historically constructed, and how criminalization has functioned as a tool for social control and domination.
