Course description

Students examine the theoretical and conceptual foundations of primary care nursing practice. They explore nurses’ roles and scope in contexts of team-based primary health care settings. Students advance their knowledge in comprehensive and focused individual health assessment across the life course, decision-making and priority setting in primary health care contexts, chronic disease management, client teaching, and health-promoting and equity-oriented practices with diverse populations.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to articulate and demonstrate your application of concepts and practices as they apply to:

  1. Foundational knowledge of primary health care nursing
  2. Roles of the registered nurse in a primary health care setting in the Canadian healthcare system
  3. Population health primary care strategies
  4. Clinical reasoning and critical thinking in a primary health care context

Prerequisites

Participants must hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or be enrolled in Year 4 of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
