Encounters with Place (Hike and Learn)

Day 1: Saturday, October 25

9 am–3:30 pm

The first day begins with a brief in-class presentation introducing students to names and imagery of local plants and waterways surrounding campus, followed by a walk through a pollinator meadow to the summit of p’kaals (Mt. Tolmie).

After a return to campus for a lunch break, students will listen to a brief presentation on the Hobbes Creek watershed and then visit the headwaters of the creek, following its path through Mystic Vale.

Language learning will centre on water features, landforms and plants (both native and introduced).

Day 2: Saturday, November 1

9 am–3:30 pm

The second day begins with a brief in-class presentation introducing students to names and imagery of local trees (both native and introduced), followed by a walk along the Alumni Chip Trail, ending at the Cottonwood Swamp forest and the Bowker Creek headwaters. Students will learn to recognize significant tree species and learn basic methods for carrying out height assessments.

After a return to the Continuing Studies Building for lunch, students will listen to a brief presentation on the flora and fauna to be found at local beaches. They will then take a walk along the lower portions of Hobbes Creek to its outflow at Cadboro Bay Beach.
