Which ELC program(s) did you attend?
I attended the Intensive English (ELPI) program.
What made your ELC program special?
My ELC program was great because the teachers were excellent and taught well. The program was challenging, which helped me learn a lot. Also, I got to talk and share ideas with people from many different countries, which was really interesting.
What is the most memorable thing that happened to you as an ELC student?
The most memorable thing for me has been gaining the ability to speak English confidently in my daily life. When I first arrived in Victoria, a few months ago, I was very nervous to even try, but now I can communicate much better and feel incredibly proud of my progress.
Do you have any favourite memories of Canadian culture?
Absolutely! My most cherished memories of Canadian culture include the unforgettable day I saw snow for the first time. I also loved the beautiful summers, especially being able to enjoy its stunning beaches. The charm of downtown streets and the incredible variety of restaurants with cuisines from all over the world also stand out.
How did learning with students from other cultures change how you see the world?
It truly opened my eyes. Collaborating with students from diverse cultures not only enriched my knowledge about different regions but also challenged some preconceived notions I might have had. It showed me the richness that comes from embracing different ways of thinking and living.
Did studying English with us open any new opportunities for you? What are you doing now?
Yes, it definitely did. Studying English in UVic opened many new opportunities. Right now, I can communicate confidently with those around me, which is a huge step. I'm currently looking for work in the city, as I plan to live here for a couple of years for family reasons, and today I feel much more confident to pursue employment in this country.
Living in Victoria was a truly special experience. I loved the beautiful nature surrounding it and its seaside spaces. The city's undeniable beauty and sense of safety were remarkable. Above all, the kindness of its people, always willing to help with a smile, made me feel incredibly welcome.
I would strongly advise them to embrace the experience fully. Don't be afraid to speak English as much as possible, even if you make mistakes–that's how you learn. Also, actively participate in cultural activities and connect with students from diverse backgrounds; it truly enhances the learning and personal growth.
