The Art of Murder: Mystery Writing 101

COURSE

Course description

Murder mysteries are one of the oldest, and most enduringly popular, recognizable literary genres. But what makes a good mystery? And how do you write one? You will survey mystery writing in its many forms: from Holmes to Christie, and Chandler to Connelly. We’ll poke around English manor houses and slum the dive bars of Los Angeles in search of the components of a good detective story: setting, plot, tone and detectives. Along with reading-based discussion, we will take a stab (or a shot, or a poison) at writing our own murder mysteries.
