Program description

Digital Planning for the Cultural Sector provides just-in-time training for professionals in the museum, heritage and cultural sector to develop the critical competencies and skills needed to make informed decisions around the future of digital technologies for cultural organizations. Learners will develop a comprehensive understanding of the opportunities for cultural organizations in a digital economy, alongside tools and strategies to successfully plan and implement digital initiatives.

Program outcomes

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Understand and think critically about the impact (opportunities/challenges) of the digital economy on the cultural sector
  2. Explain the role of digital technology in cultural organizations including: community building, communications, exhibitions, public programming, collections, increased accessibility, and other core activities
  3. Understand how digital initiatives can be integrated into a comprehensive organizational strategy and the factors used to determine priorities and deliverables
  4. Analyze organizational and community needs to make strategic decisions regarding the development and implementation of digital initiatives
  5. Apply project management principles and practices in a digital development initiative
  6. Evaluate the use of digital media in a given organization

Who is this program for?

This program is designed for emerging and mid-career professionals working in the museum, heritage and cultural sector, who are looking for innovative and flexible professional development opportunities to enhance their knowledge and grow their career. Learners in this program come from a wide variety of cultural sectors and professions, and are looking for innovative ways to leverage digital technology to enhance their professional and organizational goals.

Admission requirements

  1. Though not required, current or prior experience in a cultural organization is recommended for success in this program. It is the responsibility of the participant to ensure they can complete all assignments and contribute meaningfully to all discussions by drawing from their experience. If you have any questions about your suitability for this course, please ask us how to contact the course instructor directly before the course start date.
  2. Regular access to a computer with a reliable internet connection.
  3. University-level research, writing and critical thinking skills.

Tuition subsidy

Learners participating in Digital Planning for the Cultural Sector as a professional development micro-credential supported by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training will be eligible for a 25% tuition subsidy. Learners must be BC residents or currently living and/or working in BC. By participating in this program, learners agree to take part in a pre- and post-program survey that includes information regarding current employment status, educational background, professional goals, and an evaluation of subject matter knowledge prior to and following the learning experience. This information will be collected privately and used solely for the purpose of understanding the impact of the program in meeting the professional development needs of participants.
