2 - Marketing  (BMBA240)
Facilitated by Continuing Studies at UVic

Aug. 12 - Nov 10, 2024 (13 weeks)

This course has been designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of marketing. You will learn the fundamentals of key marketing theories, concepts and principles as well as their application in making sound marketing management decisions in a variety of for-profit and not-for-profit organizations.

Part of the focus of this course is to give you two perspectives—that of an aspiring marketer but also to have you be a more astute consumer. When you consider that much of what is marketed are things we don't really need, it makes sense to pay attention to cues and approaches so that we can make decisions that work for us—both professionally and personally.

We will cover a lot of diverse business concepts such as demographic and psychographic segments, understanding the history of marketing, product life cycles, the four P's, and marketing plan development.

 3 - Marketing Communication  (BMBA330)
Facilitated by Continuing Studies at UVic

Nov. 25, 2024 - Feb. 23, 2025 (13 weeks)

This course introduces an effective and strategic approach for implementing the promotion element of the marketing mix.  Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) merges the communication tools of marketing, including social media, public relations, corporate communications, sales promotion, sponsorship, cross-cultural marketing, advertising and new communication. The IMC approach is how today’s marketers maximize the impact of communication, increase cost effectiveness, and ensure diverse audiences and partners can receive and respond to clear organizational and marketing messages.  

You will develop planning strategies for finding target markets, create relevant key messages and recommend the right communication tools to support an organization’s marketing communication strategy. In addition, you will enhance your understanding of evolving market communication trends and how to use them ethically.

This course incorporates content about strategic elements of IMC including branding, communication theory and creativity. Through practical application of the IMC principles and tools learned, you will build an effective, creative and ethically based marketing communication plan that really delivers.

All registered students must be 18 years or older by the start date of the second course in this micro-certificate (August 12, 2024), with no exceptions.
