Humans and the Water Cycle

COURSE

Course description

Humans are influencing the Earth more than ever before — some scientists think we have entered a new geological epoch, the “Anthropocene.” This three-part course will explore how our actions (both individuals and society) affect the water cycle at the global scale (Earth) and local scale (Victoria). We will draw on perspectives from geoscience, engineering, ecology and social science disciplines to understand human impacts on the water cycle from diverse perspectives, with the goal of identifying solutions to protect water resources for all of Earth’s residents. Topics covered will include global climate and land use change, ‘Virtual Water’, green infrastructure, BC’s Water Sustainability Act (2016), and more.

NOTE: Class time will be spent both in the classroom, and exploring UVic’s campus to find local modifications to the water cycle; there will be a field trip through the Bowker Creek Watershed which starts on campus and enters the ocean in Oak Bay. Please contact the instructor ahead of time if you require any accommodation for these visits.
