Global mass extinction events have occurred at least five times in the geological past and are the result of often-complicated and interconnected causes. In this course we will focus on how these mass extinction events severely knocked life back and thereby altered the trajectory of biological evolution. The death of the dinosaurs and the rise of mammals 66 million years ago is a familiar example, but is not the only example we will study.
