Tour description

The Stratford Festival, founded in 1952, began staging productions in 1953. Its primary mandate is to present productions of William Shakespeare's plays, but it also produces a wide variety of theatre from Greek tragedy to contemporary works. It is one of the prominent arts festivals in Canada, attracting many of the finest actors from Canada, the United States and Great Britain.

In 1962, Ontario lawyer and playwright Brian Doherty staged a “Salute to Shaw”, with its mandate to promote the works of George Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries. Since then the Shaw Festival has grown to become a major Canadian cultural symbol. The Shaw Festival is a contemporary theatre that features a diverse mix of plays from the past and present.

This tour concentrates specifically on plays performed in the theatre, including three at the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake and five at the Stratford Festival. (Please read the itinerary for details about the specific plays we will be seeing.) We fly direct from Victoria to Toronto and transfer by coach to Stratford, where we stay for six nights. We then continue by coach to Niagara-on-the-Lake for a 4-night stay.

There will be plenty of time on this leisurely tour for strolling and shopping in the charming little town of Niagara-on-the-Lake and for walks by the river in Stratford.

Activity Level: Mild. This tour has a very leisurely pace, but participants should be in good health and able to climb some stairs, get on and off a motor coach and walk short distances.
