Times of Transformation in Haida Gwaii (at Mary Winspear Centre)

Course description

After the last ice age, Haida Gwaii entered a time of rapid landscape transformation: tundra changed to forest, major land mammals were extirpated, and sea levels rose by 150 metres. Ancestral Haida were on this transforming landscape, as shown by a small but informative set of archaeological sites dating as far back as 12,700 years ago. The oldest of these sites show a coherent picture of ancient bear hunting practices. Other early sites show a fluent adaptation to the rugged marine environment. Some of this archaeological and paleo-environmental data may show connections to Haida oral histories, which also begin with a great "Time of Transformation". In this presentation, Dr. Mackie will examine the data and explore the possible connections.
