The European Union and the World: Impact and Value

COURSE

Course description

The European Union (EU) is a novel institutional set-up that brings together countries that have played a disproportionally large role in the world in the distant past, as well as more recently. They have been dominant players during colonialism, but have also been at the forefront of where the action is in the current era of globalization. At the same time, the countries that make up the EU are currently engaged in de-centring Europe. We will will look at what the EU has developed in terms of culture, politics, and economics. The presentation looks at how the EU is of value to the world as well as its impact. This will be presented jointly, by Amy Verdun of the Department of Political Science, UVic, and Assem Dandashly of Maastricht University, the Netherlands.
