In this lecture and discussion, we will examine the impact of social media and other online technologies on narratives of national identity, sovereignty, and culture in the 21st Century. We will look at the rise of populist movements in United States and Canada, and examine the connections between international digital communities and domestic populism. We will use two case studies: “Trumpism” and the Proud Boys in Canada, and Idle No More as part of the larger international Indigenous Movement.
