Terrorism, Counterterrorism and Democracy (at Mary Winspear Centre)

Course description

This course reviews the history of terrorism and the efforts to deal with it from the 1960s to the present day.

With the help of a PowerPoint presentation, we will examine how terrorism has changed over the decades, including the “new terrorism” of the 1990s, the rise of al-Qaeda and how it changed after the 9/11 attacks and the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the rise of the Islamic State in 2014, the changing strategies and tactics that terrorists have used, and the evolving and expanding ways that democracies have developed to deal with them.

As the boundary between domestic and international threats continues to blur, there is a greater demand on governments to coordinate across previously distinct policy domains, jurisdictions and agencies, and to work with the private sector and civil society.
