Russia's Foreign Policy II: Present Developments (at Mary Winspear Centre)

Course description

This course will continue to study Russia's foreign policy, focusing on the present-day period. We will start with Vladimir Putin’s inauguration as President in 2000. One session will be devoted to the development of Russia’s relations with the former Soviet states, focusing specifically on the present crisis in Ukraine. The next session will discuss Russia’s relations with the West, with a special attention given to the problem of eastward NATO expansion. Following that, the course will focus on Sino-Russian relations and Russia’s efforts to embed itself more firmly within the Asia-Pacific community. We will finish with the discussion of Russia's uses of energy politics and soft power in foreign policy and diplomacy.

Classes are March 17, 24, and April 14. Also please note that class dates have changed to Saturdays from Wednesdays due to a scheduling conflict.
