Russia's Foreign Policy I: History and Evolution (at Mary Winspear Centre)

COURSE

Course description

This course will examine Russia's foreign policy in its historic evolution, focusing mostly on the pre-Soviet and Soviet periods. We will start with a session on historical antecedents of Russian foreign policy, which can be found in the medieval princedom of Kievan Rus. We will follow with a brief overview of the stardom of Muscovy, finishing before the Petrine transformation. The next session will be devoted to the foreign policy of the Russian Empire from its foundation by Peter the Great until the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. The third session will present ideological foundations, practical evolution and major landmarks of the Soviet foreign policy, ending with the start of perestroika in the late 1980s. The final session of the class will discuss the last years of the Soviet Union and the Yeltsin period in Russia’s post-Soviet history, focusing on the so-called Atlanticist and Eurasianist trends in Russian foreign policy.

Please note that class dates have changed to Saturdays from Wednesdays due to a scheduling conflict.
