Russia's Foreign Policy

Course description

Do you have an interest in government and the strategies used to deal with other nations? Are you looking to expand your knowledge on foreign policy and, in particular, its history in Russia? Dive in head-first with this course on the evolution of Russia's foreign policy.

We will focus mostly on the present-day period, with some discussion around the historical antecedents of Soviet and post-Soviet foreign policy. Over eight sessions, we will examine the late Soviet period, perestroika and the peaceful end of the Soviet Union, as well as Yeltsin's period and the evolution of Russia's foreign policy in the 1990s—with special attention given to the problem of eastward NATO expansion. We will also cover Putin's foreign policy, including:

  • its domestic foundations
  • the problem of Russia's national identity and relations with the so-called "near abroad" of other post-Soviet states
  • Sino-Russian relations and Russian-American relations
  • Russia's uses of energy politics in diplomacy
  • soft power in Russia's foreign policy
  • the Obama "reset"; and
  • the present moment of a return to a new Cold War following accusations of Russia's interference in the US presidential elections
