Course description

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Topics include: the prodigy's childhood tours and early musical influences; Mozart’s development of a mature, personal musical “voice” in his late teens; his court service in Salzburg and freelance life in Vienna; the elements of his musical idiom and the huge range of his compositional output; his gifts as a dramatist as revealed in his concertos and operas; and the innovations and idiosyncrasies in the music of his final decade.

Lectures will be supplemented with a wide range of recordings and facsimiles of Mozart’s manuscripts. No previous training in music is necessary to enjoy this course.
