Handel: His Life and Music

COURSE

Course description

A comprehensive introduction to George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), one of the seminal figures of Baroque music. This course will explore Handel’s upbringing in Germany, his formative years in Italy, his long and fruitful career in London, and his posthumous legacy. The plentiful musical examples will draw on the full range of his multifarious output, with particular emphasis on his instrumental music, Italian operas, and pioneering English oratorios, and will include popular favourites like Messiah and the Water Music as well as less familiar but no less interesting works, including Italian oratorios and cantatas, English anthems and other church music, and German arias.
