Glenn Gould: His Life and Art

Course description

A comprehensive, entertaining introduction to the Canadian pianist, broadcaster, writer, and composer Glenn Gould (1932-1982)—one of the most admired, idiosyncratic, and controversial classical musicians of the twentieth century.

This course probes the full range of Gould’s multifarious work at and away from the piano, his unconventional lifestyle and career, his famously eccentric personality, and his posthumous “life.” Moreover, both man and work will be placed within appropriate contexts: Toronto between the wars, debates about musical interpretation and recording technology, and so on.

Lectures will be supplemented by plentiful audio and video recordings, photographs, and archival documents, many of which have never been published.
