Blunt the Spear (at Mary Winspear Centre)

Part of: Borders: Geopolitical Boundaries and Beyond

Course description

Blunt the Spear: Protest, Counterprotest, and New Strategies of Resistance to Far Right Activism

In our final lecture, we will examine the emergence of dedicated counter-protest movements, those groups whose stated aims are to counter the rise of Far Right extremism. Some of these groups emphasize non-violent protest; others acknowledge – and sometimes embrace – violence as a tool. From clown parades and glitter bombs, to gas masks and baseball bats, counter-protest movements have adopted a wide array of strategies and tactics that we will identify and discuss. We will also engage with a difficult question: Can violence ever be justified as a useful tool against hate?
