Beethoven: His Life and Music (at Mary Winspear Centre)

Course description

The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven, a composer who remains central to the classical-music repertoire. This course offers a comprehensive introduction to Beethoven’s life and career, and will explore the full range of his compositions—his greatest, most popular, and most representative works but also his more neglected music, including very early works and potboilers he wrote for money. Other topics will include the evolution of his musical style through the various “periods” of his career; his compositional process, as revealed by his sketches; his work as pianist and conductor; and his personality and private life.
