Apocalypse Now: Christian Right Literature and Politics
COURSE
Course description
This talk suggests that the increasing Republican extremism in the United States may lie in the biblical worldview of apocalypse that animates its conservative white Christian base. Apocalypse is a way of thinking developed about 2,200 years ago, one evident in Christianity, especially the book of Revelation, and in contemporary fundamentalist fiction like the Left Behind series and Frank Peretti’s This Present Darkness, which revivify the apocalyptic genre. Apocalypse helps explain the radical political and epistemological crisis the U.S. is now facing.
