Course description

In lecture format, this course will introduce you to the history of Tibet from antiquity to the modern and contemporary eras. We will explore the formation of the Tibetan nation through the nature of its political and spiritual systems that have governed this isolated land since the 8th century. We will also examine its loss of independence and current survival in the context of the Peoples’ Republic of China.

Topics include:

  1. Early history
  2. Tibetan Empire
  3. Tibetan Buddhism
  4. Tibet under Yuan dynasty
  5. Phagmodrupa, Rinpungpa and Tsangpa Dynasties and the rise of Ganden Phodrang
  6. Qing and Post-Qing period
  7. Tibet from 1950 to present
