This course is designed to introduce students to the history of the Caucasus from antiquity to the modern and contemporary eras. It will focus on the formation of Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan as well as on the role of the major powers in their historical development.

Topics include:

  • Peoples of the Caucasus
  • Legacy of the fallen empires
  • National awakening in the 19th and early 20th centuries
  • The Caucasus and the two world wars
  • The Caucasus and the USSR after WWII
  • The wars of 1989-present in the former Soviet Caucasus
