1918-2018: A Century of Quests for Salvation within the Middle East (at Mary Winspear Centre)

Course description

Amidst centennial commemorations of World War I’s enduring global legacies, comes heightened awareness of the War’s pivotal role in constructing the modern Middle East—and, with that, establishing conditions for conflict in places like Syria, Palestine, and Iraq.

Central to the story is United States’ President Woodrow Wilson’s messianic call for propagating national self-determination, which quickly ran up against imperial designs (including, ultimately, the US’s).

Nonetheless, the tone was set for a multiplicity of salvational quests, carrying diverse forms of nationalism, socialism, revolutionary ideology, Islamic activism, and, not least, today’s neo-imperial missions toward countering world disorder through the restoration of past glories.
