Program description

Over 1,000 students from 30 countries attend ELPI each year. It’s a program full of options and opportunities, including:

  • 6 class levels
  • general and academic classes
  • pathways to UVic degree programs

Each day in class, you will enjoy the support of two teachers who work together to help develop your English skills through challenging projects, activities and discussions. Outside of class, you’ll have access to valuable resources like:

  • ELC Study Centre
  • Computer-Assisted Language Laboratory (CALL)
  • UVic library and computer labs

As an ELPI student you’ll learn and explore with new friends, enjoying new experiences and simple beauties on Canada’s West Coast. A full calendar of activities and safe accommodation in our UVic Homestay program will allow you to live life to the fullest and feel at home in Victoria.

Program features

  • 30 study hours per week: 18 hours of core classes + 4 hours of elective classes + 8 hours at the ELC Study Centre / Pronunication Centre / Writing Centre
  • 6 class levels, from High Beginner to University Admission Preparation
  • your choice of General or Academic classes (for intermediate to advanced students)
  • elective classes to focus on language skills according to your needs and interests
  • the ELC Study Centre, to practise real English with Canadian volunteers
  • the Pronunciation Centre, to work with a teacher in small groups
  • the Writing Centre, to receive one-on-one help with academic writing assignments
  • access to the Computer Assisted Language Laboratory (CALL)
  • free weekly activities (coffee socials, sports, workshops and tours) and optional weekend trips with our Cultural Assistants
  • Homestay accommodation and meals with a carefully selected local family
  • Certificate of Participation and a Record of Grade upon completion

Program schedule

Monday to Friday (30 study hours per week)

  • Core classes: 18 hours (morning or afternoon, 4 days per week)
  • Elective classes: 4 hours (morning or afternoon, 2  days per week)
  • Study Centre and Pronunciation Clinic: 8 hours (open Monday to Thursday)
  • Coffee Social (Friday) and other free activities that change every week

Weekends

Optional activities led by our Cultural Assistants: trips to Vancouver, whale watching, kayaking, theatre, hockey games, ice skating and visiting Butchart Gardens (depending on the season).

Registration requirements

To study in this program, you must:

  • be 18 years old by the program start date
  • have a basic knowledge of English
