Program description

The Professional Development Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (PDC in TEFL) is designed for EFL teaching professionals who are non-native speakers of English.

Providing a stimulating, interactive learning environment, this online program focuses on the ability of participants to develop their ability to teach more effectively in English focusing on six skill areas:

  • listening
  • speaking
  • reading
  • writing
  • grammar
  • vocabulary

Program includes:

  • online program orientation and all materials, including access to the online learning platform
  • a total of 100 hours of online TEFL synchronous and asynchronous instruction (includes theory and methodologies, lesson planning, principles and techniques for teaching grammar and vocabulary, English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills)
  • professional development workshops, e.g. Academic Writing, Identifying Goals and Objectives and Kagan Structures, and Personalizing and Localizing & Concept Checking

Participants in this program will:

  • assess their ability to provide effective and efficient instruction to English Language Learners in a K – 12 system
  • apply their skills in communicative/experiential classroom instruction
  • recognize key principles of second language instruction and acquisition, including methodologies, assessment and evaluation strategies, and lesson/activity development
  • employ language which will enable them to more readily communicate with colleagues
  • analyze current research and trends in the area of primary and secondary education
  • practice in a stimulating, interactive professional development environment
  • use the online community that will assist in all of the above
  • interpret and revise their own professional practices

Admission requirements

The intensive nature of our program requires potential candidates to:

  • be international, non-native English speaking education professionals with a current teaching or leadership assignment or pre-service instructors in an accredited graduate program
  • provide evidence of fluency in English:
    • TOIEC 700
    • TOEFL iBT 71
    • IELTS 5.5 or equivalent
    • or a document supporting their participation in the program by their district administration plan
