The Music of Rodgers and Hammerstein

Course description

After the emotional and physical deterioration and death of Richard Rodgers’ brilliant partner, lyricist Lorenz Hart, the composer found another superb collaborator, playwright and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein. By this time, the two were seasoned theatre professionals and, together, they reshaped the American musical theatre with Oklahoma (1943), creating a strong book, songs that flowed organically from the story and a dream ballet sequence. They went on to write eight more musical plays, including Carousel and South Pacific, a movie, and a TV musical. This course will explore the lives of the two men and their musical legacy.
