Robert, Clara and Johannes

Course description

This course provides a survey of the lives and major works of Robert and Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms, with emphasis on symphonies, concertos and solo piano works.

It is improbable that the works of Johannes Brahms would have achieved such tremendous depths of emotion as expressed in his music without the unrequited love for his mentor and friend’s wife, Clara Schumann. Is it a coincidence that the romance, tragedy and triumph of their personal lives was also the embodiment of the style of that era? What effect did Robert Shuman’s madness have on the music of his wife and his protégé?

Explore these amazing relationships in depth through the lens of their symphonies and chamber works. Discover why they will likely endure in the repertoire as a significant part of the greatest works of all time.
