Rise of the Symphony Orchestra

COURSE

Course description

A symphony orchestra is a wonder, arguably the premier ensemble of classical music. It contains within it almost endless possibility for creation of musical sound. It is both uniquely suited to performance of grand symphonic forms and perfectly capable of striking a supporting role in non-symphonic settings.

Yet, the ensemble defies absolute definition and has meant no single thing to history’s great composers, conductors, and impresarios. In this class we will explore the evolution and rise of the symphony orchestra through its music and its performers from the 17th century to the present day. No prior experience in music is required
