Masters and Mentors

Course description

Every great classical music composer was once a student. The finest of our composers will have studied under superb masters and been nurtured by inspiring mentors. Musical lineages may be capriciously fortuitous or inherited through families. Whether loving from the start or plagued by an almost inevitable contest of wills, these relationships result in music passed from one generation to be reinterpreted by the next.

In this class we will consider the music of some of the most dynamic master-mentor-student-disciple relationships, looking for the linkages and departures that together make for beautiful expressions of classical music. No prior experience in music is required.
