Marc Chagall: The Stained Glass

Course description

Marc Chagall came to create stained glass only when he was in his seventies, but there was no diminution of his powers. In fact, he reached new heights. His imagination, sense of colour and tone, his ability to “place” the light, to use it to full advantage in illuminating the glass, and the quality of the glass itself, added up to achievements so fine that he is considered to be the greatest stained-glass artist of the twentieth century. This course will begin with a short history of stained glass from medieval times forward and will examine Chagall’s religious and secular masterpieces in this medium.
