Marc Chagall

Course description

Marc Chagall was a great pioneer in the golden age of Modernism in Paris. He worked in many of the radical styles of the 20th century: Cubism, Suprematism, Expressionism and Surrealism. He was also the foremost Jewish artist of the period who, throughout his life, tried to reconcile ancient Jewish traditions with the forms and concerns of modernist art. These two “identities” combined to make him one of the most accomplished and beloved artists of the modern world. This course will explore his life and work in which he mastered a number of media, including painting in oil, watercolour, drawing, etching, ceramics, mural, theatrical costume design and stained glass.
