James Joyce: The Greatest Novelist of the 20th Century

Course description

This course offers an introduction to the four novels of James Joyce: Dubliners, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses and Finnigans Wake. Robert Amos has been delving into the works of James Joyce for 47 years, and continues to be fascinated by what he finds. Joyce has provided him with words and images which Amos has incorporated into his art, including the décor of Victoria's James Joyce Bistro. Over the course of six years he created the only complete and accurate recording of Joyce's final novel, Finnigans Wake. His approach to Joyce, a notoriously "difficult" author is not academic, but based on the idea that he is, in large measure, a comic genius and one who demands to be read out loud. Expect to be entertained by Amos's spirited select readings from these four great books. The biography of Joyce and many approaches to his work will also be considered.
