Fade to Noir: Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity

Course description

Considered one of the finest American films ever made, and the first true film noir, Double Indemnity is a compelling tale of greed, adultery and murder acted with greatness by Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray and Edward G. Robinson. Billy Wilder’s script (co-written with Raymond Chandler) retains the hard-boiled quality of the James M. Cain novel on which it is based and Wilder the director translates its moral darkness and ambiguity to the screen in perfectly conceived visuals of light and shadow.
